An internationally endorsed Ocean Best Practice (OBP) framework was used to map and classify seabed shapes (Morphology: Dove et al., 2020; Huang et al., 2023). Where sufficient data were available, these shapes were characterised with their geomorphic and process interpretation (Nanson et al., 2023). Supporting data used to inform the geomorphic interpretation included sediment samples, sub-bottom profiles, sediment and hydrodynamic models, insights from published literature, regional analogue examples, and expert interpretation.

Currency

Date Modified: 29 January 2026

Modification Frequency: As needed

Data Extent

Spatial Extent

North: -37°
South: -41°
East: 150°
West: 143°

Source information

Seabed geomorphological mapping is provided by the Marine and Coastal Geoscience section at Geoscience Australia.

The mapping is produced at a 1:1,000,000 to 1:1,500,000 scale.

These products are not intended for navigational purposes.

Lineage statement

Bass Strait geomorphology was mapped using the AusBathyTopo (Bass Strait) 30m 2022 and AusBathyTopo (Bass Strait) 100m 2022 regional scale depth models as input. Polygons were digitised with a combination of manual and semi-automated mapping techniques. All geometric attribution was completed using the GA-SaMMT Attribution tools (Huang et al, 2023). Naming and classification of landforms has followed endorsed best practice (Dove et al., 2020; Nanson et al., 2023) and registered vocabularies.

Data dictionary

Attribute name

Description

Morphology

The shape of the seafloor surface.
